About

I like problems where the answer depends on the odds. As an electrical engineer, that meant sizing a power system under uncertain demand. Now it means statistical models. At the bridge table, it's deciding how to play a hand from incomplete information.

I grew up in Johannesburg and came to the US for a BS in Electrical Engineering at Drexel. I then spent two years as an electrical engineer at Burns Engineering, working on power, lighting, and electrical safety projects for ports, transit agencies, highways, and universities.

Now I'm doing an MS in Data Science at Columbia and working as a research assistant on Bayesian models in the Movement Recovery Lab. My long-term career aspiration is to work in quantitative finance.

Research Assistant

Bayesian modeling of non-sigmoidal neural recruitment curves. When a nerve pathway is stimulated harder and harder, the muscle's response grows along a "recruitment curve." Models usually assume an S shape, but real data often doesn't follow one. I work on hierarchical Bayesian models in the lab's hbMEP framework that fit more flexible curves and show how much confidence each estimate deserves.

Design Engineer

At Burns I worked on power distribution, electrical safety, lighting, and energy projects for transit agencies, toll authorities, universities, and ports. Projects ran from first site visit to final report or bid set. These are a few highlights.

Port of Oakland Green Power Microgrid

With Moffatt & Nichol

The project started as a full seaport microgrid: a 1 MW solar array, 6.5 MW of battery storage, and about 150 heavy-duty EV chargers, backed by a $41.6M state grant. I sized and modeled the system, worked on Burns' 30-charger share of the design, and helped coordinate the 30/60/90% reviews.

In later iterations the Port narrowed the scope to EV charging alone. That package went out to bid in December 2025 as 115 heavy-duty chargers across five sites.

NJ Transit Arc Flash Study

River Line

This was part of Burns' statewide arc flash hazard analysis and electrical safety program for NJ Transit, which covers more than 200 facilities. I made site visits along the River Line, the light rail between Trenton and Camden, to collect equipment data. I then built the system model in SKM, validated it, and wrote up the findings in the engineering report.

PA Turnpike Wilkes-Barre Lighting

Toll plaza removal

When the Pennsylvania Turnpike moved to cashless Open Road Tolling, the toll plaza at the Wilkes-Barre interchange on the Northeast Extension came out. I redesigned the interchange lighting for the new layout, removing and relocating about 50 light fixtures and checking light levels in AGI32.

Clemson Ductbank Relocation

Clemson University

A new pedestrian bridge over Williamson Road, linking a new parking structure to campus, was going to sit right on top of an existing medium-voltage ductbank. Burns designed the relocation of the ductbank along with its medium-voltage circuits and fiber optic cabling, then provided bid-phase support and coordination with the adjacent projects.

Cordia Power Study

Utility data analysis & forecasting

I cleaned and validated three years of utility billing data, catching errors and anomalous readings. Then I forecast consumption to support cost-cutting recommendations. This project is what pushed me toward data science.

Along with these, I supported a range of other power and utility projects at Burns, mostly in transit, highway, and campus infrastructure.

I designed and modeled electrical control panels in Fusion 360 and helped wire them. I also sourced hardware to spec and made site visits to check installations against the drawings.

"Bridge keeps your mind sharp."SA Jewish Report, 2020

I started at age nine at the Links Bridge Club in Johannesburg, coached by Neville Eber. My father, Alon, has also played for South Africa.

I've since played for three countries. I played for England and the USA in World Youth events, and for South Africa in the Open series of the world championships, most recently in Herning, Denmark in 2025.

Bridge is basically probability, inference, and partnership under time pressure. That's a big part of why quant finance appeals to me.

Soccer

I've played my whole life. Good soccer is like good bridge: read the other side, communicate with teammates without stopping play, and decide fast on incomplete information.

I'm also a die-hard Manchester United supporter in good seasons and difficult ones. Early kickoffs on US time don't stop me, and I'm always up for an argument about tactics, transfers, or the underlying numbers.

Running

Running is how I clear my head. I've run Philadelphia's Rocky Run, and my goal is to one day run the New York City Marathon. Until then, I'm logging miles and watching my pace come down week by week.

I'm an avid pickleball player and try to get out on the court with friends whenever I can.

I'm a trivia enthusiast. I play JetPunk and Sporcle quizzes regularly and love testing my general knowledge, from capitals and flags to sports and history.
